Sociology The Study of Student’s BehaviorSociology is the study of different aspects, people, and communities in a society. Be it children, employees, adults, baby boomers, stay at home wives, fathers, students, teacher, or the behavior of any other person in society. It all comes under the heading of sociology. A sociology major studies different aspects of the society that influences one’s behavior, how and what can they do o change their behavior, and how society contributes to aiding their behaviors. In this article particularly, we will discuss why students behave in a disruptive way in their classes and what sociology teaches us about it.

What Is Disruptive Behavior?

You must be wondering, what is disruptive behavior and how can it be categorized from normal student behavior? So to explain it in the simplest terms, any student who acts in a serious disruptive way and creates chaos in class that also effects the ability of the teacher to complete their lecture or handle the class is categorized as disruptive behavior. When one student acts disruptively in any class or inside the premises of their school, it not only proves to be negative for themselves but also for the whole environment of the school. So to understand more clearly, we have talked in length about what are the different types of disruptive behaviors and how can it be negative for the student and the teacher itself.

Disruptive Behaviors and Their Types

Disruptive behaviors can be of different types and categories. While some can easily be ignored and considered as minor, others are highly rude and cannot go unnoticed by other people as well as the school’s management. When a student starts speaking about irrelevant material during a lecture or tries to monopolize a class discussion for the sake of their own fun, it is categorized as disruptive behavior. This type of behavior is called showing off or grandstanding. Not only that but passing notes to each other in class and excessively talking to other students during a lecture that confuses the teacher and makes them stop is another form of disruptive behavior as well.

This can have a negative impact on the positivity and environment of a class and often results in strict disciplinary actions from the school’s management if the act becomes persistent. While there is another negative type of disruptive behavior, and that is challenging the authority’s power or knowledge in a highly rude way because of anger over an issue of grading. This can also be because of disliking a particular teacher which compels students to act in a disruptive way with them and disturb the whole environment of a class as well. While disruptive behaviors can be of different types and categories, sociology teaches us that the back story of any student behavior is often the same.

Later in the article, we will discuss the causes that lead students to act in a disruptive way without caring about their own credibility or grades. Here are some of those reasons.

Causes of Misbehavior in Class

Misbehavior and disruptive activities in a class can be highly disturbing for the mental health of the teacher, the student itself, and other students of the class itself. Hence, sociology states that disruptive behavior can have a far wide negative impact than normally anticipated. It has the tendency to disrupt the natural ongoing process of any classroom and robs all the students of a smooth process of acquiring education. The following are some of the causes that define the misbehavior conducted by students – while these are not all, there are a lot of contributing factors to the cause:

Attention Seeking

Misbehavior often stems from the growing and irrelevant need of seeking attention by most of the students. Most of the students have an uncommon desire for attention from everywhere they go which is not commonly found in other age groups of any society. For misbehaving students, the main cause stems from irregular and uncommon need for attention from their peer group, teachers, and school’s management. While it can often get them in trouble, they still choose to shine under the wrong light of success in academics. These disruptive behaviors can be anything from acting out in front of the teachers or peer group by making fun of another, swearing for unknown and uncommon reasons, or talking irrelevantly to gain attention.

As absurd as it may sound, some students keep an uncommon desire for power from a highly young age. Some from the age of their kindergarten or middle schools, which later turn into disruptive students forever. They misbehave in order to grow fear amongst other students and gain more power over them. One of the best ways they think of gaining power over others is acting appropriately and forcing their fear on others. Such students generally choose to go in the opposite direction of the natural flow and can have a highly negative impact on the environment of the whole class. They act inappropriately because they think it makes them look cool or can make them stand out in a crowd. Some signs of a student who wishes for power in schools is they talk loudly, irrelevantly, constantly argue, and refuse to follow basic rules that are accepted and acted upon by the whole society.

Another serious cause of disruptive behaviors is stemmed from a need for revenge in students. Some children act inappropriately or lash out in their classrooms as a response to someone who hurt them in the classroom and is categorized in disruptive behaviors. While some choose to voluntarily make those actions as an act of revenge and wishes to get back at those who hurt them. It can either be their teacher or someone from their peer group as well.
